Rifflandia Festival 2011 (photos)

Victoria's Rifflandia Festival took place from September 22-25th of this year. 2011 marked the festivals fourth year and the addition of an outdoor, daytime stage on top the usual evening concerts scattered throughout the city's live music venues. The festival is an impeccably well organized event and the line-up improves every year as does the food and drink on offer. Some highlights including an inspired set from Broken Social Scene (who much to the joy of the enthusiastic crowd, just wouldn't stop playing, including a cover of Modest Mouse's "The World at Large"). Speaking of covers Mother Mother rocked The Pixies "Gouge Away" as part of their high energy set. Cold War Kids were another crowd favourite on Saturday's Main Stage. The Knock's wooed a crowd that knew little about them going in. The Coppertone was practically forced to perform an encore despite a tight schedule. Araabmusik had Sugar Night Club absolutely packed for a jaw dropping performance. De La Soul closed out the festival with audience involving set of their own. All in all a fantastic time was had by all and we can't wait for next year! Check out some photos from this year's Rifflandia Festival below and click on any photo for a larger pic and easier navigation.

Synthcake performs for Tasty Ears On Location

Vancouver's Synthcake released their debut EP titled Musicophilia earlier this year. In a recent interview with the Georgia Straight vocalist Lana Pitre was asked if money wasn't an issue "Where are we opening a (live music) venue?" she responded “Behind the Centre for Digital Media. There’s a whole bunch of old vehicles and crap, but if you go a bit farther there’s this huge space right in front of this beautiful old train that just sits there. It’d be cool if we could put in some installations and just go all out. If we had a lot of money.” Well, we decided to take them up on it... sort of. Pitre and bandmates Adam Horn (keys), Chris Martell (drums), Nathan Schubert (synth), and Kristy-Lee Audette (trumpet) took us out to this magical place and performed a couple of songs for us. First up is the title track off of their debut EP before launching into an unreleased track titled "Sail Away". It was a beautiful day for a shoot and, security guard be damned, Synthcake rocked that train. We made the music venue happen, even if it was fleeting. Thanks again to the band, it was a lot of fun. For more behind the scenes shots of the band head over to Shaine Jones Photography. Georges Couling of Knuckleduster Music did the mix.

Brown Bird "Bilgewater" (video)

KS Presents: Brown Bird - Bilgewater from Kitchen Sessions on Vimeo.
On October 18th Brown Bird will release Salt for Salt via Supply & Demand Music. The duo from Providence Rhode Island are seen playing "Bilgewater" at Blout Boats shipyard where singer/guitarist David Lamb used to work. Now I'm a sucker for acoustic guitar, kick drum, stand up bass and beards so it should come as no surprise that I love the new album. Per-order it now. Go! It's some seriously good stuff.

Moon Duo "Horror Tour"

Moon Duo are set to release an new EP on Halloween Day titled Horror Tour on limited edition 12" via Souterrain Transmissions. The four track EP is instrumental save the title track.
